What is NICAS Bouldering?

NICAS Bouldering is a five-level award scheme designed to help you develop physical skills, mental resilience, and climbing knowledge in a structured, supportive environment.

Each level builds on the last, progressing from learning the basics of balance and safety, through to advanced technique and competition experience.

Unlike casual climbing, NICAS gives you clear goals to work towards and tangible recognition when you achieve them.

The scheme is flexible—you progress at your own pace, with qualifications that are respected by climbing gyms, coaches, and the wider climbing community across the UK.

The NICAS Bouldering Levels

NICAS gives your climbing direction and credibility. You'll have clear milestones to work towards, and qualifications that are recognised across UK climbing facilities.

Level 1: New Boulderer
An entry-level award introducing you to bouldering as a physical activity. You'll learn basic balance, movement skills, warm-ups and warm-downs, bouldering lingo, and how to boulder safely. Perfect for anyone stepping into a gym for the first time.

Level 2: Foundation Boulderer
Building on Level 1, you'll explore bouldering equipment, learn how to read routes, understand grading systems, and develop your movement techniques further while maintaining safe behaviour. This level gives you the foundations to climb independently and responsibly.

Level 3: Competent Boulderer
Corresponding to most bouldering gym membership standards, Level 3 ensures you have the knowledge and skills to boulder safely at any facility. You'll learn spotting techniques, risk management, different hold types, and advanced movement skills. Achievement at this level is equivalent to a GCSE pass and typically takes around 20 hours of coaching plus personal practice.

Level 4: Skilled Boulderer
Aimed at self-motivated climbers who've reached a high level of competence. You'll develop a wide range of skills, set personal goals, and gain exposure to competition climbing. This level introduces more strategic training and performance-focused climbing. Equivalent to an A Level pass.
